SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) — The Augustana men’s basketball team heads to the Sweet 16 after a 65-60 win over Upper Iowa on Sunday inside Sanford’s Pentagon. Augustana is in the regional championship game for the fourth time in program history with the last coming in 2016.
The Vikings will face the No. 3 seed in the central region of Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Pentagon in Sanford.
To make it to this contest, Augustana had to hold off a pesky team from Upper Iowa for the second time in 2021-22. With the win, the Vikings are 26-3 this season while UIU finishes its season at 26-6.
Augustana trailed only once in the game at 4-2, but created a small nine-point buffer in the first half on a Tyler Riemersma layup with 6:39 left in the half. The lead would remain at the nine-point advantage going into halftime at 33-24.
Coming out of the break, the Peacocks cut UA’s lead to just one field goal at 45-43 on a pair of free throws from Jareese Williams, but an old-school 3-point play from Jameson Bryan ended reduced the lead to five points at 48-43.
The two teams traded baskets with Upper Iowa unable to take the lead but Augustana also unable to retire.
With just under 3:50 on the clock, full momentum began to swing the Vikings’ direction as Dylan LeBrun threw a dunk to give Augustana a 56-51 lead. The Vikings then earned a defensive save as Adam Dykman secured the rebound and was fouled. The home crowd were on their feet carrying AU as Dykman sank both Charity Strip shots for the 58-51 lead.
The Peacocks, now pressing their offense, were unable to reduce that lead as Augustana won 65-60 to survive and advance.
Riemersma scored his fourth consecutive double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. He was joined in double digit tally by Isaac Fink with 15 points, Dykman with 11 points and Jameson Bryan’s 10 points. Dykman recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds.
