Trichy: The announcements of expanding Trichy and Thanjavur corporations and upgrading Kumbakonam and Karur as new municipal corporations made by Minister of Municipal Administration KN Nehru to the State Assembly during demands for grants responded to a long-standing request from residents of the central region.
The decision to expand the Trichy and Thanjavur companies will complement the growth of the two nearby towns. “Trichy missed out on the Metropolitan Development Authority’s recent proposal for tier ii cities. After expansion, Trichy city should also get authority to ensure equal growth in all areas,” said Trichy District Welfare Fund Committee Member Dr MA Aleem. Residents said the city area needed to be expanded to cover Thuvakudi municipality and Samayapuram suburb to utilize the available land bank on the Thanjavur and Chennai national highways respectively.
Trichy Corporation sources said that a preliminary study on the expansion has already begun by listing the population and area of nearby village panchayats. As Trichy Corporation heads for expansion after 2011, this is Thanjavur’s first expansion plan since it was transformed into a municipal corporation in 2014. It is said that city panchayats and village panchayats adjacent to areas of the corporation will be merged.
“The government should appoint an IAS officer as commissioner of Kumbakonam Corporation. The scope of urban development and the availability of funds will improve,” said A Giri, a social activist from Kumbakonam. Thanjavur district now has two municipal corporations, one of which is Kumbakonam. Similarly, the panchayats of the towns of Musiri and Lalgudi in the district of Trichy have been reclassified as municipalities.
In Karur, Punjaipugalur and TNPL Pugalur will be merged to form a new municipality, the minister announced. Similarly, the panchayat of Adirampattinam town in Thanjavur district was also upgraded to a municipality. An underground drainage project and a new bus terminus were also planned in Mannargudi.
