North Central Region Road Construction Update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides weekly road construction updates for north central Wisconsin counties: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee , Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Bois.

Construction schedules are dependent on favorable weather conditions and work progress.

iron county

Highway: United States 2

Site: Between WIS 122 and County B, City of Saxon

Program: April 20 at the beginning of August 2018

Cost: $925,000

The description: Crews will replace the bridge deck and make improvements to the approaches.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures and temporary traffic lights.

Lincoln County

Highway: US 8 (*added*)

Site: Between Klade Road and Gatewood Heights Road

Program: May 29 mid-October 2018

Cost: $2.7 million

The description: Crews are replacing the roadway on US 8 and making improvements to the interchange with US 51.

Traffic impacts:

  • US 8 will remain open to through traffic. Motorists can expect signal operations, lane changes and some minor delays during rush hours.
  • Single lane closures on US 51 at interchange
  • Some short-term ramp closures (approximately one week). Each closure will have a signposted diversion route.

Menominee County

Highway: WIS 47/55 (*added*)

Site: Between the Shawano County line and Duquaine Road

Program: May 30 to November 2018

Cost: $3 million

The description: Crews are rebuilding the highway. Improvements include the construction of a roundabout at the intersection with Standing Pines Drive.

Traffic impacts:

  • WIS 47/55 will remain open, with an 11-foot lane in each direction.
  • Motorists can expect to encounter signal operations.
  • Campus Drive will remain open except for a nightly closure.
  • Duquaine Road and Go Around Road will be closed to through traffic during various stages of construction.

Portage County

Highway: I-39 (*update*)

Pitches: I-39 (WIS 54 to North 2n/a Street)

Program: April 23 at the end of June 2018

Cost: $7.4 million

The description: Crews will resurface highways. Improvements include applying a high-friction surface to the I-39 bridges over the Plover River and northbound I-39 between Business 51 and North 2n/a Viaduct from the street.

Traffic impacts: Motorists on I-39 can expect to encounter single lane closures and speed reductions. Motorists can also expect to encounter nighttime work zones.

  • May 29: The northbound on- and off-ramps of the US 10/WIS 66 West Interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • May 29: The northbound exit ramp at the interchange with WIS 66 East/Stanley Street will be closed from 2h to 6h
  • May 30: The northbound on-ramp at the WIS 66 East/Stanley Street interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • May 30: The northbound on and off ramps of the Business 51 interchange will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect to be diverted to the next interchange as crews pave the lanes in front of the ramps.

Highway: WIS 54

Site: I-39 Interchange (Plover)

Program: April 2 at the beginning of June 2018

Cost: $414,000

The description: Crews will place a concrete deck overlay on the bridge and make improvements to the approaches to the bridge.

Traffic impacts: WIS 54 is reduced to one lane on the bridge using temporary traffic lights. Some short-term ramp closures will be required.

Price County

Highway: WIS 182

Site: WIS 13 to Saunders Avenue and Flambeau River Bridge, Park Falls

Program: May 22, 2017 to June 8, 2018

Cost: $2.8 million

The description: Crews replaced the bridge over the North Fork of the Flambeau River. Remaining work includes staining and sealing of the new bridge, resurfacing of WIS 182 between WIS 13 and Saunders Avenue, curb and gutter, and new sidewalks.

Vilas County

Highway: United States 51

Site: 3rd Avenue (Woodruff) to Tuckaway Road (Arbor Vitae)

Program: April 2, 2018 to mid-October 2019

Cost: $9.3 million

The description: Crews will reconstruct the freeway into a five-lane configuration between 3rd Avenue and Tuckaway Road, replace storm sewers and culverts, replace water lines and sanitary sewers, replace traffic lights at US 51/ 3rd Avenue and US 51/WIS 47, will add right-turn lanes from US 51 to WIS 47 and replace street lighting.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures, signal operations and delays during peak hours. US 51 and WIS 47 are limited to a maximum width of 12 feet. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained.

Waupaca County

Highway: US 45/WIS 96 intersection

Program: April 16 to August 2018

Cost: $1.4 million

The description: Crews will rebuild the intersection into a single lane roundabout.

Traffic impacts:

  • Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures and signal operations during the day.
  • WIS 96: Closed at intersection and detoured via WIS 110, US 10 and WIS 76. Freeway expected to reopen August 1.
  • United States 45: Open to one lane in each direction and limited to a maximum width of 13 feet.

Motorists are reminded that it is illegal to use cell phones in Wisconsin work zones.
