Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked authorities in the central region to focus on the consequences of the recent abnormal showers and floods in the middle of the dry season.
The head of government sent an official dispatch on the matter to the people’s committees of Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces, Da Nang city, the National Steering Committee for Prevention of Natural Disasters and Control, the National Committee for Disaster Response, Search and Rescue and some relevant ministries.
According to the dispatch, the central region recorded heavy rain with precipitation of 200 to 500 mm, even more than 750 mm in some places, which is abnormal in the dry season and resulted in heavy loss of life, property and agricultural production, particularly in Binh Dinh and Phu Yen.
Expressing his sympathy, Prime Minister Chinh requested the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the heads of locality administrations to promptly deal with the consequences while taking proactive and timely response measures to ensure the personal safety and minimizing damage.
He also called on local leaders to provide relief to affected families, especially poor, disadvantaged and bereaved families, to help people cope with the aftermath of the floods and to meet the basic needs of residents.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have been instructed to work with localities to ensure scientific, efficient and safe operation of hydropower and lakes. irrigation to mitigate flooding in downstream areas.
The Ministries of National Defense and Public Security should direct the armed forces based in localities to prepare personnel and equipment to help deal with the consequences of disasters, evacuate people from dangerous areas and carry out search and rescue operations. rescue if necessary.
The Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to closely monitor the rains and floods situation to provide timely updates to local authorities and residents.
