SDSU headed for Fayetteville; Augustana #1 in Central Region

The South Dakota State softball team has been assigned to the Fayetteville, Arkansas, area and will face Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Softball Championship on Friday.

Selections for the 64-team NCAA Softball Championship were announced Sunday night.

The Jackrabbits, 42-6 overall and Summit League regular season and tournament champions, make their first-ever NCAA appearance at the Division I level. Stanford enters the tournament with a 31-20 overall record .

Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. in Bogle Park on the University of Arkansas campus, with the broadcast available on ESPN3.com.

Host Arkansas, 40-9 overall, is the No. 6 seed and is expected to host Manhattan, 22-14, in Friday’s noon opener. The four-team regional will feature a double-elimination format, with matches also scheduled for May 22 and 23.

The winner of the four-team regional will advance to the super regionals scheduled for May 28-30.

Viking Softball earns No. 1 seed in Central Region

The Augustana softball team won the No. 1 seed in Central Region for the NCAA Division II Softball Championship with their record of 44-6.

As the No. 1 seed, the Vikings receive a bye on Wednesday and will play their first game on Thursday. Central Region is hosted by Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Augustana is the defending national champion as the last team to win the national championship trophy in 2019 when they defeated Texas A&M – Kingsville.

Joining the Vikings in the Central Region by seed are: No. 2 Minnesota State, No. 3 Central Oklahoma, No. 4 Southern Arkansas, No. 5 Central Missouri and No. 6 Arkansas Tech.

The games begin Wednesday as Southern Arkansas and Central Missouri open things up with Central Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech. The Vikings will face the winner in southern Arkansas and central Missouri.

The Central Region winner travels to the National Championship site in Denver, Colorado to play the winner of the other seven regions to determine the Division II National Champion. These competitions are scheduled to take place from May 27 to 31.
